Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 95 and NT

For Windows NT, see this text file by anonymous (has no name, only e-mail address :-).

According to Microsoft, Windows Media Player 7.1 can't be installed on Windows 95. Windows Media Player 7.0 worked correctly. Why then 7.1 doesn't work? Because Microsoft is dropping support for Windows 95 in their newer programs (WMP7.1, DirectX 8.1, Office XP). When Windows Media Player 7.1 setup program detects Windows NT or Windows 95, it refuses to install - saying that operating system is not supported. This can be easily avoided by using the setup program from Windows Media Player 7.0.

To install Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 95 (maybe on Windows NT too - not tested), you will need:

Put these files to a directory on your hard drive (don't forget to unpack the ZIP files) and execute WMP71W95.BAT. It extracts the packages to TEMP directory and starts the setup program. Install Windows Media Player 7.1 as you want. You may then delete the directory with WMP71W95.BAT and also delete WMP7 and WMP71 directories in TEMP (if they aren't deleted automatically).
